John A. Griffin Pomeroy Calhoun Co. Iowa Pomeroy Iowa July 9” 1874 [Miss?] Ellen Mowrer Dear Friend I thought yours was answered long ago but as we have not heard from you I fear yours was not ans’d. I rec’d some corn from Father Paynes and with about 12 acres of wheat and 4 of oats the balance of corn I tho’t surely we should do well. I am now after the hard work of spring without even a green potato top on any place. and even the currant bushes that are three years old are peeled to the ground of bark so that it looks gloomy enough. We are in usual health. I have a little boy who will be 4 weeks old the day after tomorrow. We call him James Henry Gilbert, and one of the uncles suggests that we add Isreal
