From J W Squire, investment Banker, Council Bluffs, Iowa, Dec 13, 1889 To: Rev J W Beatty, Cascade, Iowa Dear Sir: I return you herewith the papers in the Albert Yearns $500 loan a/c of Mrs Davidson, recv'd from you Oct 15/89. I have made as strong a plea & appeal to the Johnston Mtge Co. as I possibly could, stating her need of the money &c & appealing to their honor, humanity & religion but though I offered to discount her claim, did not succeed. They assure me the loan was well secured when made & nothing but the Acts of divine providence in ordering adverse seasons whereby Crops failed has caused the delinquency not only in hers but in very many other cases. This I Know is true & many holders of Mtgs in Dak. Minn. Neb, & Kansas are in her situation. While I deeply regret it for her sake, can neither help it, nor censure my Judgment in placing the loan, which unquestionably was good when made. I think she should secure her rights to the property by foreclosure of Mortgage. Have you or she attended to the taxes & ascertained their status? On that point I have no information. Please ack recpt to Yours truly, Wm Atchinson by
