August 1934
The W.C.T.U. held Aug. 28th, one week later than the usual date, at the Congregational Church.  The meeting was opened by the singing of, "Oh, Master, Let Me Walk with Thee."  Mrs. Stoaks had charge of the devotionals.  Scripture readings were Proverbs 23rd chapter, and the 11th chapter of Hebrews.  Mrs. Stoaks' remarks were about the formation of good habits in youth, and recognition of Christ as the Savior.  Prayer was offered by Mrs. W. J. Stewart.  Secretary's report for July read and approved.  Miss Bailey, chairman of the nominating committe, read the following report:

Motion made and seconded to accept the report.  Motion carried.  Mrs. Hamilton gave the Scientific Temperance Instruction report.  48 essays were written. 43 in Grinnell, 5 in rural district.  5 posters were made.  Mrs.  Robert Lincoln sent her report of the Peace Department.  Two prizes were given, on essays written on the subject, "Is war the best method of settling International disputes?"  Ralph McCain received 1st, and Richard Blake 2nd .  Rev. Inglis gave the address to the High School students.  Miss Park reported that the Herald was not printing the W.C.T.U. column in the paper now as was done the beginning of the year.  Mrs. German made motion, seconded by Mrs. Hess that W.C.T.U. send the "Union Signal" and "Crusader" to Stewart Library.  Motion carried.  Miss Butler reported that a contribution of $1.00 had been asked by Mrs. Mann to help with the expense of the State Convention at Des Moines.  Motion made by Mrs. Stoaks, seconded by Mrs. Mitc[?] that this be sent.  Carried. (continued on p.87)
