206 October 1943 MRS. FISHER HOSTESS TO W. C. T. U. MEETING The October meeting of the Women's Christian Temperance Union was held with Mrs. Emma Fisher, Miss. Nellie Lincoln presiding, and Miss Edna Sherman reading the devotionals. Rev. W. J. Stewart gave a talk on the assigned topic, "Alcohol and the War Effort." Letters were read from sixth grade pupils in Miss Ina Sprague's class thanking the W. C. T. U. for blotters with temperance mottos, each child saying he had had a lesson on temperance that morning, and telling his own reason why he was convinced that tobacco and liquor were bad things to use. Mrs. George C. Murray and Mrs. G. O. Watland were elected delegates to the W. C. T. U. state convention to be held Nov. 9, 19, 11,in Des Moines. COUNTY W. C. T. U. WILL MEET HERE There will be a meeting of the Poweshiek county W. C. T. U Thursday afternoon Oct. 28, at the First Friends church beginning at 2:00 p. m. Mrs. May Fleener will have charge of devotionals. Mrs. A. W. McBlain will speak on the topic, "The Place of the Local Union in Community Life". and Rev. Geo. B. Evans, pastor of the Friends church will speak on "Liquor and the War". A cordial invitation is extended to anyone wishing to attend Oct. 1943 W. C. T. U. Held Co. Convention Here Thursday The county convention of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, held Thursday in the South Side Friends church, was called to order by Miss Nellie Lincoln, the president. Devotions were led by Mrs. L. May Fleener, who read a portion of scripture suited to the Thanksgiving season. The hymn, "Count Your Many Blessings" was sung, Mrs. A. W. McBlain playing the accompaniment. Rev. George Evans, the speaker, read passages from a booklet, "Liquor and Our National Defense", by Sam Norris. He also read a list of historic wars that were lost because officers and men had been drinking the night before, commented on some of the present day problems. Miss Jane Huff sang, "When Jesus Comes, He Breaks the Tempter's Power", accompanied by her sister, Mrs. McClure. Mrs. A. W. McBlain, speaking on the topic, "The Place of the Local Temperance Union in the Community", cited things a local W. C. T. U. could do. Miss Edna Sherman stated that the W. C. T. U. has working units in 36 nations and islands. A memorial service was read for four members who had died during the year, Mrs. P. A. Madill, Mrs. G. D. Parmenter, Mrs. Mattie Squire and Mrs. O. W. Park. The following officers were elected: president, Miss Nellie Lincoln; vice-president, Mrs. Wm. Mollison; secretary, Mrs. Vista Baker; treasurer, Mrs. W. J. Stewart. The following superintendents of departments were also chosen: International Relations, Miss Edna Sherman; Evangelistic Wark, Mrs. L. May Fleener; Religious Education, Mrs. George C. Murray; Scientific Temperance Instruction, Mrs. C. D. Loose; Flower Mission, Mrs. J. C. Barnum; Child Welfare, Mrs. A. W. Barnum; Child Welfare, Mrs. A. W. McBlain; Speech Contest, Mrs. O. W. Glassburn. The W.C.T.U. met Oct. 19 with Mrs. Emma Fisher. The vice president, Nellie Lincoln, presided. Devotions were by Mrs. Mary Swain. The guest speaker, Rev. W. J. Stewart, was introduced by Edna Sherman, program chairman for this meeting. Rev. Stewart spoke on Alcohol and War Efforts. Minutes were read and approved. Nellie reported that she got 840 blotters. Nellie read a letter from Ina Sprage, teacher of 6th grade in Davis School, and also several letters written by Miss Sprague's pupils telling why they were impressed by the mottoes and why they would not drink or smoke. Mrs. Stewart said she could not serve as Treasury. We accepted her resignation with regret. At Miss Sherman's suggestion we had a [session?] of prayer, asking what to do about a treasurer. Mrs. Murray and Mrs. Watland were elected to the State Convention to be held in Drs Waines Nov. 9-10-11. Voted to send a [thank?] offering to the collection. Collection was taken. Came to $6.50 for Convention gift. Rev. Stewart became a member. Cheerfully paid $1.00. Ada Park - Secy.
