207 November 1943. W. C. T. U. MET WITH MRS. A. B. MANSON Mrs. A. B. Manson was hostess to the November meeting of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. Mrs. George E. Mitchell presided and Mrs. L. May Fleener led the devotionals. Mrs. G. O. Watland made a report on the state W. C. T. U. convention held Nov. 9-10-11 in Des Moines. She reported that since Mrs. Harriet G. McCullough had been the state president for seven years, she was not eligible for re-election. Mrs. Lydia Stotts, of Marshalltown, was elected State President. Elects New Officers at Session Mrs. Lydia Stotts of Marshalltown, Ia., was elected president of the Women's Christian Temperance union of Iowa Wednesday at Capitol Hill Church of Christ here, where the sixty-ninth state convention is in session. Other officers were being elected early Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Stotts is the former vice president, and succeeds Mrs. Harriette G. McCollough of Des Moines in the presidency. Other officers during the last year were Mrs. Margaret E. Gawtry, Fort Dodge, recording secretary; Mrs. Maude Morain, Des Moines, treasurer; Mrs. Bertha Barber, Denison, board chairman, and Mrs. Helen Graff, auditor. Services. A memorial service, devotional service and vocal solos were also included on the Wednesday morning program. Said to be the oldest member at the convention is Mrs. T. E. Pearson, 83, of Denison, Ia. She joined the W.C.T.U. in 1884 and heard Mrs. Smith give her "maiden speech" as president of the Iowa W.C.T.U. about 30 years ago. Mrs. Pearson came to the convention by train with her sister, Mrs. Bertha Barber, also of Denison, chairman of the state board of trustees. 1943-44 The W.C.T.U. met Nov. 16 with Mrs. A. B. Manson. Mrs. Mitchell presided. Mrs. Fleener read the devotionals. Minutes of the Oct. meeting were approved. Voted to reimburse the Secy. $2.35 which had been advanced to pay for 3 subscriptions to the union signal. A letter from the mayor was read. Mrs. Watland reported on the Convention. She said Mrs. Lydia Stotts of Marshalltown was elected State President because Mrs. Harriette McCullough had been pres. seven years and could not legally be re-elected at this time. Mrs. McCullough was given a nice gift, and banquet. Mrs. Watland brought a petition for us to sign. Mrs. Hess sent thanks for a card from the W.C.T.U. Ada Park - Secy. I hope the administration will continue to merit your approval. No doubt the taverns in question will be opened again at the end of their thirty-day closing, however, if they do not heed the laws regarding the sale of beer to minors I feel the council will revoke their licenses and close them permanently.
