218 1944 Aug. 15, 1944 Sept. 1944. July 18, 1944 (continued). Question was asked, "Did Earl May receive 100 letters requesting him not to advertise liquor?" At the request of Mrs. Mitchell, a short talk was given about Denver by the secretary who had been there. At ten minutes to four the president turned the meeting over to Nellie Lincoln who read poems from Edgar Guest, preceded by instrumental music, Handel's Llargo. Potluck Picnic. Adjournment. Ada Park, Secy. August 15, 1944. Held at U. P. Church. Mrs. Mitchell presides, leads devotions, and presents program. Tells of Temperance Day at the Interdenominational Bible Conference at Cedar Rapids. Mrs. Stewart, who attended, tells of hearing Roy King speak at that conference. He emphasized that drunkenness is a disease. Twelve or fourteen great temperance movements. Mrs. Loose speaks: Says, We should preach that it is more desirable not to drink, rather than preach that it is unlawful or wicked to drink. At the business meeting, minutes of July read and approved. Nom. Com., not ready to report. Mrs. Watland gives a talk about "continuing membership". Report of Com. on entertaining new members: Mrs. Loose says all of the com. had been out of town. Sentiment of meeting was that new members should be honored at the meeting held the 3rd Tuesday in September, which would be at Mrs. Loose's house. Mrs. Loose asked if white ribbons could be presented. The pres. appointed to get new programs ready. 24 names have been added to the membership roll since the last tea for new members. Adjourned. Ada Park, Secy. Sept. 19 -- 1944. Meeting held with Rev. and Mrs. Loose, Mrs. Mitchell presided. Rev. Loose conducted devotions: Theme, Sober Men for a peaceful world. Let us release power thru prayer. Mrs. McBlain presented the program: Says, 5 million labor. 6.5 million church members. Have they as much influence?
