222 March 1945 Mrs. D.E. Skilles was hostess Tuesday to the W.C.T.U. In the absence of the president, the meeting was presided over by the vice-president, Mrs. H.A. Jackson. Devotions were led by Mrs. Catherine Raffety. The program was given by Mrs. Fay Stanley. Mar 1945 The W.C.T.U. met Mar. 20, 1946 with Mrs. D.E. Skilles , Mrs. Jackson, the V.P presided. The January minutes were read and approved. Mrs. Watland reported that she had a receipt for $2.40 sent for blotters. She would donate $1.00 if the rest of us would contribute the other $1.40. We collected the $1.40 and 46¢ more. the $1.40 was given to Mrs. Watland. Voted that Ada Park serve as assistant treasurer. The extra 46¢ was placed in her care to be given to the treasurer, Nellie Lincoln. Mrs. Fay Stanley presented the program. The topic was Health. Why do people drink? 1. Because invited. 2. To feel different. 3. Used to it. 4. If denied, "don't feel good." 5. Enslavement. What do they Drink? Mostly Beer. 90% beer 6% wine 4% distilled liquor. Alcohol affects personality. One who gets no "recognition" from good deed may strive for attention by doing bad. To escape unbeautiful homes, may go into cheerful saloon. Announcement made that [American?] Legion plans erecting a "community building." Mrs. Jackson reports that where her daughter lives (LeRoy, Minn.) the town is going to have a "children's home" where the children can work and play. Mrs. Manson says Tom Godfrey is a good candidate to vote for. Edna Sherman told about a letter from [Vitito?]. Adjourned at four o' clock. Ada Park, Secy. L.A. Renfrow Passed Away Early This Morning L.A. Renfrow, respected Negro resident of Grinnell, died early this morning at his home 411 First avenue, after a long illness. Funeral arrangements are uncertain, pending word from children who are out of town. Friends may call Smith Funeral home for the date and time. The husband of a member of W.C.T.U. W.C.T.U. TO MEET WITH MRS. McCLURE TUESDAY The Women's Christian Temperance Union will meet with Mrs. E. L. McClure, 1026 High street, Tuesday, April 17 at 2:30 p.m. 1945 Rev. and Mrs. R.K. Storey, who were rescued after having been held prisoners by the Japanese in Manila, arrived in Grinnell early Wednesday morning and are now guests in the home of Mrs. Storey's parents, mr. and Mrs. G.W. Richards. The landed in San Francisco last Saturday. APR. 26. 1945
