October 1947. The W.C.T.U. held Family Night potluch at 6:30, Wed. Oct. 22, at the home of Rev. and Mrs. A.W. McBlain. After the supper, a program was presented. Devotions were read by Rev. A.W. McBlain; the topic was Family Safeguards. Rev John R. Bartow developed the theme. Discussion followed. [Omitted] also too part. A reading was given by Ada Park. At the business session, at which the new president Mrs. McBlain presided, a vote was carried that we use a recommended study book Some Notes on the Alcohol Problem, and that at each meeting we devote ten minutes to the recommended chapter in the book. Also that we devote five minutes to giving a review of the Union Signal of the indicated issue of that magazine. We voted to have a public meeting, to be held in the Methodist Church at 3 p.m. some Sunday, as soon as could be arranged; Mrs. McBlain to have full authority in arrangements. Statement was made that at least two eating places in Grinnell do not serve beer, the Dixie Ave. Stop ,and the Cafe in the [Covault?] property near Parker school, the Sixth Avenue Cafe. It is believed some others also. Mrs. Bartow said the Raven was "dry". Seventeen were present at the meeting. The WCTU appreciated the presence of guests. Mrs. Bartow is our new member by transfer. A potluck supper was followed by a program and the October business meeting, presided over by the president, Mrs. McBlain. Discussion was held on having an open meeting some Sunday afternoon soon. Devotions were led by the Rev. Mr. McBlain, carrying out the theme of the importance of family worship. The Rev. John R. (AP) - The Iowa W.C.T.U. convention, in session here Wednesday, re-elected all state officers. They are Mrs. Gertrude Walton, Des Moines, president: Mes. Maude Morain, Des Moines, vice-president; Mrs. Bertha M. Barber, Denison, corresponding secretary; and Mrs. Luella Ely, Guthrie Center, recording secretary. Resolutions adopted including condemnation of "moderation propaganda," terming it a "device to defeat abstinence and to recruit new addicts to the liquor habit." The organization dismissed a so-called current claim that alcoholism is a disease with an assertion that such a claim is merely an alibi for drinking. <clipping> Parley Set by W.C.T.U. (The Tribune's Iowa News Service) BURLINGTON, IA.-Nearly 500 members of the Iowa Women's Christian Temperance Union are expected here Oct. 20 to 23 for the state convention. The Rev. Samuel Morris of San Antonio, Tex., will be the main speaker on the opening day. Mrs. Glen Hayes of Ransom, Kan., recording secretary of the national Women's Christian Temperance Union, will speak on the second day. The silver medal speech contest will be held Oct. 22 and the convention will close with resolutions and election of officers.
