April 1948 May 1948 The WCTU met April 20 with Rev. and Mrs. Whitely. Rev. Mr. Whitely presented the program. He told of safe passage being given for the vessel that had the copies of the Bible. He told how we could have peace. In discussing the book, "The Trail a Boy Travels," by the late Hervey S. McCowan, he used the expression, "In the first place, to find God." Mrs McBlain presided at the business session. Minutes of preceeding read and accepted. Treasurer reported $39.99. Mrs Allen talked about the speech content. Collection taken was $2.45. Announcement was made that the next meeting would be with Mrs. Harlan Inman at 1027 West Street. Adjourned - Ada Park, secretary. [Newspaper clipping] W. C. T. U. TO MEET TUESDAY, APRIL 20 The W. C. T. U. will meet at 2:30 p. m. Tuesday, April 20, with Rev. and Mrs. Charles O. Whitely, 613 West street. [Newspaper clipping] MRS. WHITELY HOSTESS TO W. C. T. U. APRIL 13 Mrs. Charles O. Whitely was hostess Tuesday, April 13, to the W. C. T. U. Mrs. A. W. McBlain presided at the business section. Rev. Mr. Whitely presented the program, speaking on the assigned topic, "Safeguard the Future." He reviewed the book, "The Trail a Boy Travels," by Hervey S. McCowan, who was a beloved teacher in Grinnel College in 1916. Mr. Whitely regards this book as the finest explanation of a boy's problems that has ever been written. The WCTU met May 16 at the home of Mrs. George C. Renaud 931 Elm St. In the absence of the secretary, Mrs. J. R. Bartow was asked to take the Minutes of the meeting. Mrs. Catherine Raffety had charge of the devotion, reading from Ephesians, the 6th chapter, the first 4 verses. Mrs. Jackson gave a very interesting review of the article in the Union Signal on "Safeguarding the Children". Mrs. Stewart gave a good report of the Temperance lecture given in the Methodist church on Sunday Evening May 14th. The was under the auspices of the Temperance Committee of the state. Mrs. McBlain told of 4 of the ladies of the WCTU attending the Workshop at Searsboro on May 8th. Mrs Allen was asked to give a brief report of this meeting. She said the Scientific Temperance Instruction Department was stressed in this meeting. Mrs. Earhart and Miss Trowbridge, the ladies conducting this meeting were invited to come to Grinnell on June 20th for an afternoon Meeting in the interest of organizing a new Youth Temperance Council. TO HOLD WORKSHOP MAY 8 The W.C.T.U. will hold a work shop program at the friends church in Searsboro Saturday May 8, beginning at 10:30am. The program will be as follows: 10:30-11:00, devotionals. Explanation of the S.T.I. plans, Jessie T. Earhart. 11:00-12:00, discussion and project work, Miss Lela Trowbridge. 12:00, noontide prayer. 12:00-1:30, noon hour. 1:30-2:00, Book review, "The Story of Alcohol", Evalyn Bowen. 2:00-2:45, Flannel Graph, Miss Lela Trowbridge. 2:45-3:30, questions and sicussion, Jessie T. An interesting program on "Safeguarding Childhood" was followed by a report of the Sunday night address in the Methodist church by Dr. W. E. Hotalen of the National Temperance movement with headquarters in Chicago. Mrs. W. J. Stewart gave this report. Mrs. Ralph Allen discussed the workshop meeting held recently in Searsboro. A public meeting will be held Sunday, June 20, at 3 p. m. at which time a group of speakers from Oskaloosa will present a unique program. Everyone is invited to attend.
