1950 November Meeting [clipping] OBITUARY Mrs. Lillie May Fleener Lillie May Gilbert Griffith Fleener, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Gilbert, deceased, was born July 15, 1875, on a farm in Mahaska country, near Grinnell. She departed this life Nov. 5, 1950, at the age of 75 years. She was one of a family of eight children, five boys and three girls. Three brothers, her two sisters and her parents preceded her in death. Those surviving are her two brothers, Amos Gilbert of Blue Point, and Fred of Scobey, Mont., her daughter, Mrs. Louise Hoskiness of Davenport, 7 grandchildren, and 1 great-grand child and many nieces and nephews. When about five years of age she moved with her parents to Grinnell, settling on a farm five miles south of town for a short time. Later they moved into Grinnell where she spent the remainder of her life. Here she attended the Grinnell public schools, and was united with the Methodist church when a girl of fourteen years, under the leadership of Rev. Matt L. Hughes during his ministry here. On January 25, 1893, she was united in marriage to H. V. Griffith, a Grinnell business man. He departed this life in the year 1926, having been a Grinnell citizen for 37 years. On August 11, 1927, she was united in marriage to H. H. Fleener of Grinnell. He preceded her in death in the year 1934. Her life was characterized by loyalty and faithful attendance to the church and kindness and supreme service to others. She was highly respected during the many years of her life in this community. Before leaving this life, she chose Luke 4: 36-40 for the Scripture to be used at her funeral and also the songs "Good night and Good morning" and "No Night There." Burial was in Hazelwood cemetery beside her first husband, Mr. Griffith. [end clipping] Nov 20 the WCTU met with A B Manson with our President Mrs Fan Stanley presiding. Meeting opened by members singing the WCTU Temperance Hymn. President had charge of the program. She read from St John 3 to 14 verses also 4 to 7 for the devotionals followed by prayer by Mrs McBlain. An article read by Mrs Pepoon If Alcohol if a food "And it is" Yale Day Supplement. An article was read by the President on Universall Military training from The Union Signal. A very informative and interesting report was given by Mrs Allen on the State Convention held at Newton Iowa Oct 17 to 19 inclusive. Secretary report read and approved. Mrs McBlain requested the Treasurer give a report at each meeting on those who have paid their WCTU dues. Mrs McBlain also reported on the installing of the Memorial Fountain for Ada Parks. Mrs McBlain sugested the WCTU put Temperance Flags in the churches also sugested a work shop. Closed with the [Benediction?] -Eva M Pepoon Secretary
