381 duet - "True-hearted, whole-hearted" sung by Lela Adams and Bessie Alexander. Minutes of last meeting were read and approved. The treasurer reported $20.00 in treasury. Eloise Keister reported that she had contacted some students and a friend connected with the college concerning the inter-collegiate oratorical contest, and that there seemed to be no opportunity to enter this year. A few pieces were brought for the Benedict House and few used greeting cards to be sent to Formosa. Decided to continue these projects. 36 calls and 13 cards were reported. Mabel Morgan presented the program on the theme - "Our Field - Trained for Action." She stressed the necessity of knowing how to do things through training. She presented the work of the Institute department as a means of promoting this knowledge, and mentioned the help available through our publications. Miss Morgan also presented a petition to be sent to Congressman Kyle concerning further action of our government on the passage of the Becker amendments referring to the matter of prayer and Bible reading in schools and other religious liberties. Report of Eloise Keister from the study book covered 2 chapters - "Does smoking shorten Life?" and "Diseases of the Heart and Blood Vessels." She used charts to show that among 1,000 smokers, it was proved that they shorten their lives 10 years as compared to non-smokers. The death rate is higher among cigarette smokers and higher still among those who are heavy smokers. It is a major health and life destroying hazard. In the U.S., there are 35,000 deaths annually from lung cancer, and one out of 10 smokers die of lung cancer. Smoking increases the pulse beat and blood pressure, also has a definite effect upon metabolism and upon body temperature. Mrs. Adams shared some thoughts on prayer and connected with the temperance crusade. Meting closed with prayer by Mrs. McBlain. The W.C.T.U. met with Bessie Alexander on April 21, with 12 members present, Mrs. Harvey Mikkel presiding. She opened the meeting with pledges to the flags, and song - "This is My Father's World." Mrs. Mikkel used scriptures from Matt 21:14-16 and Mark 10:13-16 for the devotional period. She mentioned Youth Temperance work, quoting statements from the winner in oratorical contest, by the corresponding secretary, and from Miss America. She read an article recommending use of postcards to commend or criticize the sponsors of radio and TV programs, especially the children's programs. We were led in prayer by Bessie Alexander. Those present signed a card to be sent to Lela Adams. Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. The treasurer reported $33.00 in the treasury.
