Woman's Christian Temperance Union minutes, Grinnell, Iowa, 1913-1928

389 Presbyterian church. Attending this conference will be representatives from unions in Jasper, Mahaska, Iowa, Tama, and Poweshiek counties. Tentative plans for the conference were mentioned, and prayer requested for its success. We then had a report from the Citizenship committee concerning the survey. Carol Sammons had obtained from the mayor some copies of applications for liquor licenses, both class "C" and class "A", also the band issued in connection with such applications, and resolution to accompany license applications from corporations and clubs. These copies, together with one of liquor control licensee liability insurance certificate were passed around at the meeting. She stated that the city OK's the application for such permits but licenses are issue by the state. Clubs pay $500 plus insurance for class "A" permits (held by Country Club, Elks, etc.) Taverns where they can sell to anybody under the law, pay $700 plus insurance. These must be at leave 300 ft. from any church or charitable organization. Poweshiek Co. received $9,000 from liquor sales in 1964, and Grinnell received $1200 as the city's share from liquor licenses sold. We were informed that the population of Grinnell is 7,400 plus the college. There are 2,200 property owners. Tax levy is 96.696 mills per $100. Treasurer was instructed to send 113 more budget dollars, and to renew the subscriptions to Union Signal and Young Crusader for the Library. Meeting was closed by repeating Lord's Prayer. April - Spring Conference. W.C.T.U. met with Bessie Alexander on May 18, Rachel Mikkel presiding. After pledges to the flags, we were led in devotions by Lila Adams. There was "For This Child I Prayed" - scripture 1 Sam. 1;27 and Eph. 6:1-4. She read a number of personal clippings and devotions concluded with brief prayers by several of the women. The program leader was Mrs. Claude Thompson. She presented facts and asked questions concerning prohibition and conducted a discussion of current problems. Minutes were read and approved. A motion was made that Mrs. Cox by contacted and films secured from her for V.B.S. A brief report was made of the area conference held recently in Grinnell. We were reminded of the opportunity of teaching temperance in the Sunday Schools. Treasurer reported $12.25 in treasury. There were 20 calls and 16 cards reported, also 3 bouquets of flowers. Meting was dismissed by repeating the benediction.
