406 leader was Carol Sammons, the theme being - "Recount of Victory." She read an article - "I'm All Mixed Up." She mentioned the 94th national convention with the theme - "Action Ahead," and presented some remarks from the national president, Mrs. Tew, also Mrs Harmon of the legislative department. We were reminded of the goal of one million members in the nation by 1874. She also reviewed "Recounts that Set New Strategies," or new ways to do old things. We will have the same general theme for two years, with a continued theme each quarter. We were informed of the "Action Ahead" membership contest. Motion carried to promote such a contest - which is to be Sept. 1- Nov. 30. Carol Sammons were appointed as leaders of the contest. Minutes were read and approved. Motion carried to send ten cents per member to the Education Fund, and treasurer instructed to do so. One hundred copies of the leaflet - "Young Mothers must Enlist" will be ordered to be used during the membership contest. Reported 20 calls, 9 cards sent. Mention was made of the State Convention which will be held in Oskaloosa Sept. 23-25. Meeting was dismissed with prayer by Mrs. Allen. W.C.T.U. met with Eva Pepoon on Sept. 17, Lela Adams presiding. After repeating pledges to the flags, we sang - "Advance, not Retreat." Mrs. Allen led in devotions on the theme - "Launch Out," using Luke 5:1-11. After comments, she led in prayer. Minutes of the August meeting were read and approved. Nellie Lincoln read the annual treasurer's report. The coming state convention was mentioned, and Lela Adams appointed to serve as our delegate, expenses paid. It was decided to sent ten dollars as our thank offering. The membership contest was discussed and many paid dues. Mable Morgan presented the program on the theme of "Motivation." She read several articles concerning the election and on the subject of legalized gambling which presented opinions and facts. There were 60 calls and 33 cards reported. Meeting closed with the song "Blessed Be the Tie", and the Aaronic benediction. W.C.T.U. met with Lela Adams on Oct. 15 with 10 present Meting opened with songs. We were then led in devotions by Lela Adams, using the scripture in Ex. 3:1-15, with comments from the Union Signal. Pledges were repeated and minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Reports of the state convention were given by Lela Adams and Mrs. German, and a written report from Carol Sammons. Mrs. Warner had charge of the program. She reviewed articles concerning elections, and laws. Discussion follows. Meeting was dismissed by singing "God be with you," and the benediction.
