409 youth," considering the causes, effects and possible cures for the serious problems advanced by the prevalence of liquor, the use of tobacco and drugs, and the crimes resulting - all of which affect the attitude of young people. We were challenged to plan a long-range program of cooperative effort. Mrs. Adams read an article - "Why Don't you Wear the White Ribbon?" Meeting was dismissed with the joining of bands to sing - "Blessed be the Tie", and closing prayer by Mrs. Allen. Area Conference was held on May 20 at the First Friends Church, beginning with registration at 9:30 A.M. and continuing until 3:00 P.M. Devotional periods were led by Rev. Harris and Rev. Leslie Warner. There was special music, group singing plays and informative session at 10:00 and again in the afternoon, following the cooperative luncheon at noon. These were representatives from Poweshiek, Jasper, Johnson, Marshall and Iowa counties. Mrs. Cecil Roberts, Iowa state president, was in charge and she was assisted by Betty Cummings, state promotion secretary from Cedar Rapids. W.C.T.U. met with Lela Adams on June 17, with 11 members present. Devotional theme was "The Peril of Insincerity," and presented by Lela Adams. She also selected a song to be sung and led in the pledges. Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. Carol Sammons and Fae Allen reported on the area conference held in Grinnell the month previous. A note from Rachel Mikkel was read and contents, distributed as she had suggested. It consisted of a letter from a Sioux City lawyer whose 16-year old nephew had been killed in a car accident with a drunken driver. It was the hope of the uncle that the inclosed statistics could be published in the newspapers. There were 28 visits reported, also 34 cards sent, 9 bouquets given, and 2 legislative letters and one petition sent. The legislative report was given by Carol Sammon. Program theme was - "National Concern," and articles were reviewed by Eloise Keister, Nellie Lincoln, Fae Allen, Mrs. Thompson and Carol Sammon. A special offering was received for the Pespi-Cola fund for veterans, and $10.00 was allowed for this. Meeting concluded by a circle of fellowship as we sang "God Be with you," and prayer by Eloise Keister. W.C.T.U. held their July meeting with Nellie and Hazel Lincoln. Meeting opened by President Lela Adams. Theme of the July devotions was "God is a Nation's Life," led by Carol Sammon Nellie Lincoln, our treasurer, stated that we need $11.00 more for budget dollars sent into the state.
