419 No December 1970 meeting - icy January 20, 1971 The January W.C.T.U. met in the home of Rev. and Mrs Myron Harris. Eloise Keister had charge of the three flag salutes. The devotions were given by Carol Sammon which were Christian Growth Through useful work. Thank God every morning that you can get up and have something useful to do minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. Rev. Harris' topic was Gambling. It is for suckers. 90% of gambling is illegal There was a 500% increase last year in the US 50 billion dollars is spent annually on gambling There is more money used for gambling than there is for educ, and defense Gambling is trying to get something for nothing. Gambling leads to dope, drinking, and prostitution. It is also the cause of embezzlement. Many criminals live near gambling places. There are 7 million compulsive gamblers in the U.S. They are like alcoholics and can't stop. There are schools for compulsive gamblers. Eloise asked us, "What is honesty?" She also asked "Is there a half truth?" Our president Eloise Keister asked us to pray for the white ribbon workers in Cuba, Equador and Egypt. A thank-you note was read from the Thompson family for $2.00 memorial we sent to the state W.C.T.U. in monies her memory we wrote a 'get well' note to Lela Adams I thanked the W.C.T.U. members for the pretty 'get well' card they send my mother while she was a patient in he hosp. in Dec., 1970. The treasurer Nellie Lincoln told us there is $42.00 in the treasury She also said that it's time to pay the Stevens and Willard funds and send money for our legislative work. It was motioned by Sammon and seconded by Harris that these three bills be paid We gave our Jones collection for the Willard Fund it was - . We still need old, used greeting cards. Eloise filled out a social service sheets about societies we have helped. We closed with a prayer. Carol Sammon - Secretary
