Fort Madison Aug 2 1839 Dear Father I had made calculations when seeing you this Spring or summer and have done what I ought not to delayed writing to you for some time- I am however obliged to abandon all thoughts of leaving here for this year at least but as I have written to William am determined within a twelve month to see once more the scenes of my childhood. Notwithstanding time and distance a day never passes over me but what I think of you and of my brothers and it is one of the clear cut objects of my life to be in such a situation as to be able to see you over more - I am still in the enjoyment of good health and if my spirits are not as boyant as ever still they are never depressed very low, Elizabeth is now well but her health has not been very good for some time past - I consider myself fortunate in my choice, she makes me a good wife one who divides not doubles the cares of life - I had occasion this summer to go to St Louis for the first time I was much pleased with the plan, it has all the appearance of a City contains a Cathedral a large Theater a population of 16000 and is rapidly increasing it is (illegible) that a thousand buildings will be erected this year, its suite is as handsome as I ever seen - but I (illegible) it unhealthy - I also have been to Mineral Point which is in Wisconsin about 35 miles from Galena, I went there to try to obtain some money that was due me but failed - This is in the lead & Copper region but it is also a.......country and is destined one day to be the wheat part of the United States, the country is prairie interspersed with groves of timber and is high rolling land Galena contains a population of 5000 Inhabitants, it is the roughest place, with the roughest population from all parts of the globe that I ever saw. Mineral Point contains about 1200 Inhabitants and is in the center of the lead & copper diggings - I send William a few specimens of the lead & copper ore - I sent up the
