Penn Yan Oct 2, 1825 Dear Father I have an opportunity of sending a letter by Doct Judd who is a going directly to the Plains, otherwise I should not have written quite as soon. I arrived here Teusday in the forenoon just as the Court of Common Pleas had commenced sitting. I made myself acquainted with Judge Oliver who is the first Judge & he introduced me to the other lawyers of the place. I put up in a Hotel opposite the Court house, where I have to pay two dollars a week for my board. The Judge appears to be a friendly sort of a man & invited me to call at his office & offered to let me [illegible] any books from his library I chose to read previous to obtaining mine - he has the reputation of being a sound lawyer & good counselor - but is no orator - Mr. Marten is a partner of his & boards in the same house with me. W Vonburgh is the most voluble & easy speaker, but is said to be rather superficial, he is the surrogate of the County & also post master. There are two other attorneys in the place, W Nevens & Lord. I have not seen enough of them to form much of an opinion concerning them - nor in part from the others - having got a bad cold I have confined myself to the house since I have been here.
