Penn Yan Dec. 8. 1825 I received your letter on the 25th of last month, but did not write immediately in reply, as I thought the letter I wrote to William would reach you within a few days, I am glad to hear you enjoy good health and that the rest of the family are well, my own health is very good at present - I have now been here long enough to become somewhat acquainted with the Country its inhabitants & to form a little estimate of what my prospects are, I have had some business & altho trifling it is as much as I could reasonably anticipate - my expectations were not sanguine & I shall not be disappointed in any event; by perseverance I shall in a few years enter into a fair competition with others of my profession in this village & if I can succeed in maintaining myself this year I have no fears for the future. I purchased books at Albany to the amount of about $150 this amount I believe was more than you expected me to get & in disappointing your expectations in this respect is the only regret I have experienced, my assortment is I believe very good & altho less than any other attorney in this village is as much as I need, it would have been very irksome to have passed my time without some of those books I ought to read & by having something of a library I can pass my time pleasantly enough, I have entered on a course of reading by which I hope to improve myself in the knowledge of my profession. Judge Oliver is the best lawyer & the most studious man
