Penn Yan January 29, 1826 Dear Father Your letter of 24 of last month I received by Jacob Steven. I was very glad to hear by Steven and also by your letter that you & the family are in the enjoyment of good health my own health has been very good the last three months and from what I have observed of this Village I believe it is as healthy as any other, there has been but little sickness here this winter. In a former letter you wrote that William intended to take his Counsellors licence this winter, & that perhaps I had better come down to Albany at that time I should like well to go. & should be glad to see him & have sometimes thought I would; If I do I shall be there the day previous to his examination he has some small accounts of mine to collect which will be sufficient to bear my expences there & back. The Court of Common Pleas & Circuit Court have been held here this month Judge Throop presided. I was made acquainted with him and was much pleased with his polite deportment & easy manners. He told me he was acquainted with you; there was not much business before the Court & what there was was principally criminal, I have been an attentive observer of their manner of conducting their legal proceedings as I have much to learn in the practical part of my profession as was as in other aspects.
