It is not as easy to get a discharge as some think Lieut Ritner looks better than he did in the winter but is far from being a healthy man, Poor Judson lies beneath the clods of the vally also Frank Bonner. Poor fellows life was as dear to them as to us but they fell in a good cause, disease kills more than bullets Spangler makes a good soldier so does John Davis Yesterday four hundred and fifty prisoners passed here bound for a cooler climate. They were good looking set of fellows but wer poorly clad which made them look a great deal worse than they would under other circumstances some wer old and some were young We are looking for about fifteen hundred more soon as I understand they are on the road Our forces are in possession of Grand Gulf and the mouth of Black river. They had considerable of a little fight there I understand and our men are now on the south side of Black river, pushing for the bridge from Vicksburg to Jackson, we are protected on the left by the river and the gunboats and on the right by the black bayou and the swamps so they have nothing to contend with only in front how strong their works are at the bridge I cant tell, I should not be surprised if we found something to contend with in that vicinity, should we be successful in destroying the bridge they will be completely cut of and never can get their big guns a way I think Grant will soon have them hemed in
