We had a fine shower of rain night before last and it cooled the air, last night it was cold enough for frost had it been in Iowa and today a man can wear his coat very comfortably but the most of the time the weather is very warm corn is knee high that is the only crop that they have out in this section but that is gone to Davy Crocket, we have made use of the most of the fencing for fire wood and our rout is right through the plantations wherever the best ground is, On this plantation there is a large building with four gins two corn crackers a circular saw mill all propelled by steam There are some sixteen or twenty dwelling houses several large stables blacksmith shop in fact everything that is needed on an establishment of the kind but evry thing is badly out of fix at the present, Our brigade is here, we left our tents at the river, also some of our blankets, I don't know as we wll ever see them again but we have not teams enough to haul them along, General Crocker is commanding Quinbys division now, Col. Hall of the 11th is in comm and now, Col Ried commands the first brigade Col Chambers is at home at the present Our troops are in good spirits and first rate fighting trim, we anticipate the ocupation of Vicksburg before long and many a poor fellow will be sent to his long home if we are defeated before we give up the strugle.
