September, 1987 Dear Members of the Presidents Club and The Presidents Club Associates: Since Mr. Freedman's departure in July, The University of Iowa has taken many steps to further its mission toward excellence in higher education under the able leadership of Interim President Richard Remington. Mr. Remington has enclosed a letter to you accompanied by several articles that indicate what he is striving to accomplish. He is committed to ensuring that action is taken and decisions are made to continue the University's mission. Also enclosed is the UI Foundation's new edition of Planned Giving: A Guide to Gifts and Bequests. The brochure contains the most current information available about the tax and financial implications of charitable gifts, and reflects the changes necessitated by the 1986 Tax Reform Act. Through the years, The University of Iowa Foundation has repeatedly stressed to our alumni and friends the importance of maintaining a current and comprehensive estate plan. As part of our efforts, we attempt to reach as many of our alumni and friends as possible to encourage them to prepare a thorough estate plan - whether or not it includes Iowa. We hope you will let the UI Foundation know if we can be of help as you and your advisers consider our plan an outright or estate gift in support of The University of Iowa. If you have not yet sent in your reservations to attend the gala world premier of The Joffrey Ballet's new production of The Nutcracker, to be performed at Hancher Auditorium in Iowa City on December 10, 1987, we encourage you to do so immediately. Included in the cast will be 33 Iowa children who will travel with The Joffrey to perform at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. following The Nutcracker's Iowa premier. A brochure with reservation form and return envelope are enclosed. Finally, we are proud to announce that the 1987 President's Club Report, featuring the University of Iowa Center for the Book, has recieved one of this country's highest honors recognizing graphic excellence: It will be included in the November issue of Communication Arts, the magazine's 1987 Design Annual. We will write to you again in January regarding the 1988 date for the Presidents Club assembly. We hope that you will be able to join us to see, first hand, The University's many accomplishments. Best wishes and thank you again for all that you do on behalf of The University of Iowa. Cordially, Erling Larson, M.D. Chairman I don't know how we survived the winters,
