It was usually sometimes - "It is [illegible] that the Dean's wife participate "in this and that and the other inaffective fluttering about. Or again, "As the wife of the Dean it is appropriate that you should head the committee." A nice and easy way of unthinking individuals to dispose of "goings-on"; a foolish way to accept them under pressure. It was never once to my knowledge - "As an individual, so as an artist, or as a human being. Even van Ek. should be allowed to pursue her own creative bent."
