Rome March 30, 1929 - This is as far as I got the other day. And when I begun the letter, I was spending my second day in bed with the flu. Since then I have not felt able to continue. Today, however, I am basking in a flood of sunshine, trying to get the last germs out of my system. The flu settled in my bronical tubes - a sweet sore throat I've had! But its getting better now but I can't go out for a few days more - until I've fully recovered. Since then also, we've had your second good letter - the one you sent to Rome. Thanks for all the news and for the quotations. We enjoyed them all. The same mail brought us letters from Mother and Bob also - and it was good to have them all. We shall also want an autographed copy of your book - but you mustn't give it to us. Supposing that when I get my book finished and published that we will swap - or just as you please! Or we will purchase your. I may never get mine finished in spire of all my hopes and ambition. So far I don't really know whether I like Italy or not. Of this much I'm sure though, that Europe won't be so fascinating to me as was the orient and the tropics. Its much more civilized and safer. - in fact quite like our own land - and of course it has its points. But the unusual, the unimaginable, the picturesque and the utter fascination has been left behind in that other world. I'll never get the thrill and the vivid impressions that I got there. I'm very sorry that I haven't been able to see any of the holy week services. Some of them are very interesting. Van has gone to several and shall go again tomorrow. We will get him to tell us about what he saw - but I should like to see for myself. As to the small city. We shall visit the Vatican anyway and if there is anything that will add to our experiences I hope not to miss it. At any rate we shall tell you all about everything when we get back but we do like to see how things are done - no matter where or who does them. The other day I didnt finish my story about the excursion that we took to Pompeii. Pompeii is quite a distance from Mount Vesuvious and it is really surprising because of the relationship that they bear to one another. According to history, you know, Pompeii was buried
