Aviation Cadets Hancock College Santa Maria, California July 27, 1943 Dear Evelyn: Glad to get your nice letter and alas its good news that you and your Mother are getting along OK. Yes! this is the Army and as you say, It is tough. Four and one-half weeks of training have gone by here at Gunnary and our squadron has only 41 left out of the original 70. The Wash out rate is high and they are really tough. I had the Mumps and got too far behind so worked them for a 10 day leave and now will go on with the new class. Yes the toy horse was worth more to me than money will ever buy, and I was indeed lucky getting these. Glad you like your work, and say Hello to your Mother. Sincerely, Joe
