From Somewhere In The Southwest Pacific Nov. 1-1943 Dear Evelyn Please pardon me for not answering your letter sooner as it was really not my fault. (Alibi) -> I just came back from a furlough to the mainland and was handed a load of mail and in the bunch was the three letters that you sent. I sure was surprised to receive such charming letters and when I opened the one with your picture in it my heart jumped about four extra beats. I showed it to everyone in the camp and boy did I get the questions thrown at me, they wanted to know who you were and where you came from and what you name was but I just laughed and said wouldn't you love to know. I can't really tell you where I am except that its in the jungle where you never see a white woman and it rains most of the time (and I mean rain) but the mud is lovely, so nice and black and ankle deep. I bet you would love it if you were here (what a sense of humor). But all in all its not so bad, we get fed pretty good and we have a
