12-23-41 Dear Evelyn: The first thing I’d better do is to make an apology. I am very sorry that I did not answer your letters and send you a picture. May I say that my intentions were good but when war broke out I could not carry them out. It is a long story but I will try & put it into one paragraph. When I was back in Callan I intended to get my picture taken and send it to you for Xmas. As I told you before I went down town on Sat. and planned on getting it taken then, but I met Slack and forgot all about it. Later on in the evening he mentioned something about it to me & I told him that I would come back Monday. That Monday never came. We stayed in San Diego that night & Sunday we got up about eleven o’clock
