Reserved for Patrick Cullen July 6, 1943. Dearest Evelyn: I haven't kept my promise very well, but this is about the first time I have come up for air since I have been back. Starting today, I will write every day for at least one day. I got back last Sat. in plenty of time so that I didn't make the grand horse of course any trouble. I went to bed Sat. night and Sunday [illegible] met me in Oakland and we went around. I didn't enjoy myself so well because all I could think of was Waterloo and my interest there. All [illegible] and I talked about was what we done and how we did it. I certainly enjoyed my furlough, especially the last few days when I was with you. Sometimes I wish I would have stayed over a week or two. It would have been worth a few days in the guard house.
