Dec 25 1943 Dear Evelyn, This is Xmas night and I am spending a sort of quiet evening on duty. I wouldn't have had to take duty tonight, but I relieved another fellow so that he could spend the evening with his wife. I didn't care too much about going out tonight anyway. Last night went to a party at the YMCA and then went to midnight mass. Oh! By the way, Everett Schuese came back again. He and I went out last week a couple of times and we are hoping he will still be here for New Years Eve so that we can spend that together too. He is not quite sure just how long he will be here. I received your card and the book Thursday. I want to thank you for it, because it does contain a lot of moral building material. Did you receive many presents? I got a really good ring from my folks and Alice. I surely like it, because it is something I have wanted for a long time.
