May 3, 1941 Camp Claiborne Dear Evelyn, Well it looks like another week has gone and I have another afternoon free. I hope they don't try and find some kind of detail work for me to do. The camp is located about 18 miles from Alexander and a lot of the fellows have gone there for the rest of the day. I hear that the towns around here are rather lively. Guess a person can find anything there that he wants. I haven't been in yet and don't imagine I will for awhile. I'll still take a drink once in awhile but I' don't go in for all of rest. We have to get up at 5:00 am in the morning and don't get off until 5:00 pm so it makes a rather long day. So far all we have done is close order drill with rifles and take to hikes. They treat us alright if you can call being bossed around every minute of the day by some 19
