Sicily Aug 26, 1943 Dearest Evelyn Hello Hon. Yes its me again. I've been putting off writing hoping that we would be getting some mail but guess my hopes aren't going to come true so I'll try and write a few lines anyway. There hasn't been much going on lately in the way of news. We are still at the same old routine. I've really been taking things easy lately. I've been able to see some more of this island and it all seems about the same. Its about the rockiest country I've saw. They've piled up rocks and made walls for fences. Some places you can be driving along the road and looking over the country side, why it is just one wall after another. The land is divided up into small plots of any where from 1/2 to about 5 acres. They picked the rocks up and piled them in large piles around over each patch of ground. Its really dry here too. They have an irrigation system which I imagine that they use in the spring but now it doesn't look in very good shape. I don't see where they get the water to run it any way. Its still plenty hot here. Where I've been this summer the sun has really shone. We haven't had any rain to speak of since last March. In a way I'm sort of glad of it as the way we've been making our tents to try and keep cool, a good shower would just about drown us. Have you been having any difficulty in reading my
