Italy Oct 24, 1943. Dearest Evelyn, I imagine you've been wondering whats became of me as you probably haven't had a letter from me for quite a few days now. I quit writing letters at all for just about a month. For awhile we had no postal service and when that was fixed they wouldn't let us say anything. So I just started writing again the last week. I put off writing to you as I was hoping to hear from you. The latest of your letter I had received was of Aug 20. Got in some more mail this evening and 3 letters from you, July 5th, July 7 and Sept. 17. Was really glad to hear from you. As you have probably imagined by now I'm in Italy now and have been for some time. I've been able to get around here a good deal lately and have seen lots of Country. The people here don't seem to be near as bad off as a lot of the other places we've been. The towns are a lot cleaner and the people are a lot better dressed. Their main means of making a living seems to be the raising of grapes and olives. Most of the grapes are used in the making of wine and the
