5/10/42 Sun a.m Dearest: I received your special delivery about an hour ago. You ought to be getting mine about the same time. I presume by now you understand why I wasn't able to write until Saturday. When the army gives you orders they don't give a damn about your personal affairs. We were not allowed to leave the place nor was there any writing material or anyone to get it. I ate meat loaf, army style, for five meals.....phew! No, I never make a promise and then forget it. It just wasn't possible for me to keep it. Moreover, I knew practically nothing of what it was all about until late Friday night.
