Monday [June 29, 1942] Darling: Today a fat envelope arrived from you. I knew you had no time to write so anticipated the contents. But your cool little note.... no subscribed "love", just "hastily".... You wouldn't think I could get a degree of satisfaction from it, would you? Yet I did. Because, if you did feel hurt and faintly alienated last week it indicates another way in which we react alike. In your place I couldn't have added my love either. I can only offer it when I actually mean it with all my heart.
