Saturday July 4th [1942] Dearest: This has been the longest day - and the draggiest - that I recall in months. We had mail delivery and while I didn't exactly expect a letter from you I hoped for it. A lot was accomplished - postals written, stencils cut, material prepared for others. I was reminded that people like me by telephone calls, a telegram (from the convention), letters (including one from Patson Harris with the most astounding tribute I ever received); and funny things happened, too. For instance, I determined this morning to lie abed (in the hope of shortening the day)
