Most of the parents in the district were present and the general opinion expressed by both parent and scholars, was "We will never get such another teacher." If they had a good house they would keep me as long as I stay in the State, and I expect they would give me a hundred dollars a month next summer if I would teach for them. You will think "Self praise is half disgrace", but you can hardly imagine the satisfaction it affords me to think I have so won the confidence and esteem of strangers. And I supposed it would also be a satisfaction to you or I should not have written it. Even in a pecuniary point of view my reputation as a Teacher and as a man is worth five hundred dollars to me. I have had four applications to teach other schools - three of them before my other school closed. Considering the offer from this place the best I came here and will commence teaching next monday. I am to get eighty dollars per month: my board will cost four dollars per week; washing and incidentals about one per week, leaving me sixty dollars per month clear. The village of Washington stands on the west bank of the Sacramento River opposite Sacramento City, with which it is connected by a fine bridge having a draw to allow Steam-boats to pass.
