Jordans Grove Ills Jany 13th 1863 Friend McDill - I have been going to write to you for a long time - I have at last got at it - But now what shall I write? I have nothing of importance to communicate. It has been such miserable traveling in a buggy since I have been here that I have not been able to go round to see any of your friends - I have not heard of any thing strange among them - I left my honey at St. Louis with a merchant to take care of (and sell some) till such time as I could get it brought here - It was broken some by the handling on the Boat - We unpacked it - and as your box had no glass over it - the hands got their fingers in it - I gave him express orders not to sell it, but to take good care of it - He did not sell it, but as it was damaged I shall give Mr. Mc.'s two of mine in place of it. -I am sorry it was stolen but mine will be just as good. We have not had any winter here - except 3 or 4 days the ground was frozen two or three inches. It's now as pleasant as Summer except the roads - Clear and warm day and night - not even cold enough for white frost - We have had three or four great rains.
