Sparta Ill's May 30th 1861 Dear uncle i think you are a good while about writing i am going to send you a few lines and if you do not answer i will never write to you again Mother has been sick a good while but is a little better that rest are all well Granpap is well and is reading papers all the time We take the daily paper which he gets times is hard money is out of the question the army worms is eating up the wheat and corn aunt Elisa McDill died yesterday morning of the consumption and was buried yesterday evening the rest are all well there is a going to be a good crop of apples and peaches this year there was a company of men left chester 3 weeks ago and went to bellvile to be sworn into serve as soldiers and a company from here 2 weeks ago Rank Swanwick was captain of the chester company dan J. E. Detrich of the sparta company Which they will likely have to stay three years and probably not more than thirty days they took the oath for three years if needed to stay Wheat is worth 80 to 90 cts per bushel turn over
