The prime necessity of of winning a great victory was upon him all his knowledge of combinations and methods all his energy and capabilities for unceasing work, were laid under tribute for the accomplishment of this stupendous result. Johnston's Necessity Battle reports had fallen like blows upon his head. The dreary monotony of defeat had not been broken by a single victory. Mill Springs, Ft. Henry, Ft. Donnalson, Pea Ridge, Middle Creek, New Madrid & Isiland No. 10. One after annother his forces had been driven from their chosen positions or captured within their works. His heavy artillery which he depended upon to guard the water arteries to the heart of the confederacy were in the hands of the Union forces. His reputation as a Commander was at stake.
