Grant gets command March 17th and immediately moves the divisions of McClearnard & C F Smith (now commanded be W.H.L. Wallace) to Pittsburg Landing and the division of Lew Wallace to Crumps Landing 5 miles below.

arrived and a 6th division was formed from the regiments daily arriving
Army consisted of 44,895
at Pittsburg or Shilo -- 37,330
at Crumps Landing -- 7,565
no disposition of these troops were made except for their comfort.  The fact that Johnston was but 20 miles away with a larger force seems to never have been taken into thought. 
Yet it was a natural strong position, Snake Creek on the right, Lick Creek on the left, Owl crek in front
leaving 1 1/2 miles that could be attacked.
