Gen Buel during this time gen Buel was organizing an army at Nashvill but owing to Johnstons retreat from easter Tennesee Buel was instructed to reinforce the Army of the Tennesee a Savanna & Pittsburg Landing. Sending Gen Mitchell with the 3rd division to Huntsvill Al to watch Kirby Smith. Commenced to march his force by overland to savanna a distance of 130 miles on the 16th of March Gen Buel commenced his march but coming to a stream called Duck river they found the bridge burned and the water very high 10 days were spent in trying to rebuild it. Gen Nelson commanding the 4th division became impatient and riding to the head quarters of Col Jacob Ammen commanding the 10 brig ordered him to cross the river next morning a daylight. The colonel as is the bridge done no! are there boats No!
