at break of day the division was at the bank of the river the command is given Halt! order arms stack arms unsling knapsacks off with your cloths! and in a moment that grand division stood as naked as Adam & Eve were in the garden of Eden. Knapsacks were put in wagons clothing tied in a bundle and hung on the bayonet and the shivering column waded the swift and deep stream the other divisions followed. The march to Savanna was very difficult owing to the streams and mud. Nelson's Division arrived at Savanna and reported to Grant a 3 P.M. April 5th and proposed to march that afternoon up the river opposit to Pittsburg Landing but Grant told them to make the troops as comfortable as possible and he would send boats for them the first of the week that there would be no fighting until we should get to Corinth.
