Johnston waited as long as he could for Vandorns army from Arkansas. But on the night of the 2nd of April information reached him that Buels advance had left Columbia and in 2 hours his Corps commanders had recd marching orders for Pitts Burg Landing. Johnston was aware that Grant's position was a natural strong one and had no reasons to suppose but that it would be fortified but the importance of an immediate attack outweighted evry other consideration his command was supplied with 5 days rations and 100 rounds of ammunition. On the afternoon of April 3 his troops began to move. The point of concentration was the Mickey house at the crossing of the Monterea & Coninth road 7 miles from the Landing and 4 1/2 from Shilo Church.
