At break of day next morning (Sunday April 6th) reveille was sounded the men were soon in their places in ranks to answer to roll call. The company to which I belonged (Co. C. 48" O.V.I.) was notified that we were to go on pickett that day and were dismissed to cook breakfast and get ready. While we were eating our breakfasts an occasional shot was heard, then annother then four or five then a volly and then deep thundertones of the artillery on our left. The long roll was sounded and soon the division was under arms. The evening before Gen Prentiss had sent out the 21st and 25th Mo & a part of the 16th Wis to strengthen the picketts on the left and it was this force that had come in contact with the Confederate advance that
