They Halt! They Falter! They retreat! and the fighting ceased for that day. Their grand object had not been accomplished in one day. Darkness Spread over the terrible field, darkness that almost could be felt and a drenchin rain set in. during the night Grant was arranging his lines & crossing Buels forces. The Confederates beivoaced on the field over which charge and counter charge had been made during the day It was covered with the dead and dying the most piteous grones were heard on evry hand by friend and foe as they lay writhing in mortal agony from gaping wounds and from burns from the fire that had be raging in the leaves during the day. The two Gunboats kept a perpetual canonading during the night like a minute gun at sea and harassed the confederats who were tired from their marching of the 4 & 5 and the constant fighting of the day.
