Gen J C Pemberton succeded to the command. In the fall of 62 Gen Grand arranged a base of supplies at Holly Springs and started overland with a force while Gen Sherman went down the Miss river. it rained allmost incessantly the roads became impassable Van Dorn made a successfull cavalry raid and destroyed Grants supplies at Holly Springs. Sherman was compelled to make an attack on Walnut Hills (comonly called the Chickasaw Bayou) which lasted from 28" to the 30" of December in order that Grant could get back with his force when this was accomplished Sherman moved his forces away. Clark in his Vicksburg Repository says this was the worst defeat that the Union forces met with during the war that Sherman lost 10,000 men while the Confederats lost but 200. This is an exageration
