Gen Grant improved there and by cutting down trees he wedged steamboats and Gunboats through where never a boat had been before and threatened to come in upon their works from the north Fifty miles up the river is Lake Providence he threatened Vicksburg by a system of bayous from that point and by these different moves he could keep up the moral of his troops deceive Pemberton. and quiet the people of the north and the War Depot which were constantly planing for the generals in the field. But when Gen Grant was ready to move on Vicksburg he showed that he had studdied the map of the country and without any faint or even a cautious move he boldly pushed his army into the heart of the enemies country and cut himself off from any base of supplies
