At daylight on May 1st Gen Carrs division of the 13" A.C. came upon the confederate pickets at Magnolia Church three miles west of Port Gibson. The confederats were commanded on the field by Gen Bowen with 8,500 he had a strong position at the church uneven ground and a cane break in front. The men fought stubornly leasing 60 killed 340 wounded & 600 prisoners, and one battery.
