Sherman joins him at Grand Gulf on the 7" of May. Gen Grant has formed the plan for a campaign that must be carried out with great energy He does not propose to march directly upon Vicksburg but to push NE to Jackson the capital of the state, capture it destroy the R.R. then about face march west cross Big Black river drive the confederats from Hainses bluff and open communications with Yazoo river. The 120 wagons can carry 5 days rations when that is gone the army must subsist off of the country until communications is opened up. At daylight May 12" Logans division of the 17 A.C. came upon the confederate pickets at Fourteen Mile Creek a small tributary of the Big Black. it is Greggs division which has come in hot hast to dispute Grants advance on Jackson.
