There are deep gullies on the sides of the hill. The road from Clinton running west winds along the southern base and joins the middle road. 8 oclock A. M. May 16" A. J. Smith's division moving west from Mr Ellistons house where they had buyvoaced during the night along the Raymond road. Came upo Lorings division of Pembertons army Bowers & Stevensons divisions were at the junction of the Clinton an Middle roads They were hastning north to join Johnston army But Pemberton saw he must fight Hougs Logans and Crockers divisions are advancing on the Clinton road At 10 oclock there is a rattling fire along the picket lines both armies are deploying
